The Cedar Mountain boys’ varsity basketball team hosted the Buffalo Lake- Hector- Stewart Mustangs in a Tomahawk Conference contest on Thursday, January 16 in Morgan.
The Cougars started off slow, taking their time and steadily building their game. They had some trouble early on, giving up some turnovers and struggling with cold shooting.
At the halftime break, the Cougars were facing a three-point deficit, with a score of 33-36.
In the second half, however, they pulled it together and things started to go the Cougars’ way.
They not only erased their first-half deficit, but they more than doubled the Mustang’s second-half point total to earn the conference victory with a final score of 72-53.
In true Cougar fashion, the team had five players scoring in double-digits in this game.
Devonte Charles led the offense with 14 points and three assists. He also added eight rebounds and one steal. Caden Kleinschmidt added 13 points, one assist, six rebounds and five blocks.
Trey Peterson-Juhl and Chris Dow each contributed 12 points to the total. Peterson-Juhl also had three assists, six rebounds and one steal, while Dow added three assists, one rebound and two steals. Nick Freitag added 11 points, two assists, one rebound and two steals.
Dakota Pendleton added eight points, four assists, six rebounds and one steal, and Jon Varner had two points, three rebounds, one block and one steal.
The victory takes the Cougars’ overall record to 7-6 for the season.
They face the Knights of Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Tuesday, January 21 in Morgan, and then travel to Bird Island on Friday, January 24 to take on the BOLD Warriors.
