The Cedar Mountain School Board met for their regular meeting on Monday, October 18 in Franklin.
At the beginning of the meeting the board acknowledged two donations in the amount of $200.00 each. One donation for Back the Pack program another to the Imagination Library from St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church.

The GFW School Board held their regular meeting on October 18.
The meeting began with recognition of the transportation team. Superintendent Jeff Horton said many school districts have had trouble with transportation needs over the past year and GFW is no different. However, the transportation team has stepped up to provide services beyond the norm during the pandemic and deserves to be recognized.

Merel Timmer, a 17-year-old from Kudelstaart, Netherlands arrived in the United States August 19. She will be spending a year experiencing a new culture, visiting the local area, and immersing herself into the “typical” senior year experience of an American high school student.
When asked why Timmer chose to study abroad in the U.S. for an entire school year her reply was because of her love of the “American Dream.”

The Renville County “Toward Zero Deaths Coalition” has been educating the public on the benefits of wearing seat belts. With seat belt use in the county less than the state average percentage the coalition had local schools competing in Seat Belt Challenges against each other. Teams of four were timed buckling in all four positions of the car. The Cedar Mountain seniors on the championship team did it in a record breaking 36.15 seconds and didn’t break a sweat.

Behind every face there is a story. Chris Gordon, a special education teacher in New Ulm woke up one day in the spring of 2015 with a softball-sized lump in his elbow. Within a matter of hours his life was upended when it was determined that a minor scratch, he got on his hand in his garage turned into him contracting a flesh-eating bacteria.

On October 1, Lafayette Public Charter School students in grades four through eight gathered to listen to candidates’ speeches and to cast their votes for Student Council members for the 2021-2022 school year. The mood was quiet and respectful, as students patiently waited for an open voting booth, and once ballots were dropped in the official box, each of them received an “I Voted” sticker. Just like in real life, in a world before Covid brought an end to many “normal” school activities.

During the month of October, Cedar Mountain is highlighting National Bullying Prevention Month and continuing to ensure our students safety. We are continuing to use a proactive approach to anti-bullying as well as utilizing A.L.I.C.E during our building lockdowns.

The 2021 GFW Homecoming Candidates were announced last Wednesday. They are (front row from left) Jasmine Moore, Brooklyn Werner, Lauryn Messner, Trista Ernsting, Lexi Rettig, (back row) Treay Taylor, Ike Case, Brody Hentges, Trevor Schweiss, and Jesus Muñoz. Homecoming week is October 11 – 15.
