Dr. Allan J. Hartzell, age 86, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away on Monday, May 3, 2021 at his home with Marlene by his side.

Memorial Services were held on Friday, May 7, 2021 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory, Sioux Falls.

Allan James Hartzell was born on April 5, 1935 in Clara City, MN, to Alvin and Anne (Tammen) Hartzell. He grew up and attended grade and high school in Morgan, MN. Allan was very active in high school activities, playing football and basketball; singing in the chorus and playing piano; in Speech he won 1st Superior at the Regional Speech Meet and had the lead in the Senior class play; and was valedictorian of his class. Allan was also very active in Boy Scouts of America as he earned Eagle Scout with Palms, Order of The Arrows, and Lutheran God and Country Award Pro Deo Et Patria.

He attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN and graduated with a BA degree, majoring in chemistry. He attended the University of Minnesota receiving an MD degree in 1962. He interned at the County Hospital in San Bernardino, CA. Dr. Hartzell did his residency in urology at the University of Minnesota and at the Minneapolis Veterans Hospital. He started his urologic practice at the Duluth Clinic in Duluth, MN, in July 1967.

Dr. Hartzell was drafted into the US Army Medical Corps in September of 1967. He served as Chief of Urology at Ft. Jackson in Columbia, SC and at the Ireland Army Hospital in Ft. Knox, KY. He was discharged in September of 1969 with the rank of Major.

In 1969, Dr. Hartzell returned to practice at the Duluth Clinic. In 1973, he joined Dr. John H. Hoskins at Urology Specialist in Sioux Falls. Dr. Hartzell also served as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Urology at the USD School of Medicine. He also was a member of the Minnesota Urologic Society and of the American Urologic Association. Dr. Hartzell started a branch office of Urology in Worthington, MN, in 1976. He retired from practice in 2004.

Dr. Hartzell was interested in US and Western European History, classical music, hunting, and fishing. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife of 35 years, Marlene Hartzell of Sioux Falls, SD; son, Brent Hartzell and his wife, Sherrie of Seabrook, TX; brother, Curtis Hartzell and his wife, Joan of Littleton, CO; and many, many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Anne (Tammen) Hartzell.
