MATTHEW LIESER

MATTHEW LIESER

January 23, 1983-December 27, 2021

Dr. Matthew Jon Lieser, age 38, of New Ulm, MN died on Monday, December 27, 2021, in Eden Prairie, MN.

Mass of Christian burial was held on Monday, January 3, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm. Burial followed in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.

Matthew Jon Lieser, was born and raised in the baseball town of Cold Spring, MN, on January 23, 1983, to Tim Lieser and Judy (Kalthoff) Lieser. The oldest of four, Matt was a proud big brother. He was an All-State Choir member and an avid tennis player. He graduated from Rocori High School in 2001.

Matt attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN. He double majored in Biochemistry and Chemistry before graduating in 2005. He began medical school at the University of Minnesota that fall. He graduated in 2009 before beginning his residency training at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis in the Internal Medicine program.

Matt married his best friend, Andrea (Busch) Lieser, on July 8, 2006 at Gustavus where they met. Upon graduation from residency, the couple moved to New Ulm with their then 1-year-old son for Matt to begin his medical career as an Internal Medicine physician and hospitalist at New Ulm Medical Center.

Matt’s greatest life accomplishment was becoming a father to the three greatest kids around: Hudson, Davis and Sawyer Bea. Matt was an all-in, hands-on Dad. He made the best grilled cheese sandwiches with “extra love.” He grilled steaks in just the “right way” and always knew to make extra hotdogs and hamburgers. He gave the best bedtime back rubs. He baited a thousand hooks while fishing with the kids. He sat hours upon hours building Legos with the boys. If he wasn’t gaming with Hudson and Davis, boating with the family, traveling with Andrea, going to the park with the kids, he was caring for his patients. NUMC was Matt’s extended family. Caring for other people was his life’s passion. Matt wanted everyone to feel appreciated. He generously gave his time to anyone who needed it.

Matt is survived by his wife, Andrea Lieser, his three stellar children, Hudson, Davis and Sawyer Bea Lieser; mother, Judy Lieser; father, Tim Lieser; siblings, Ryan (Carolyn) Lieser, Megan (Ryan) Gracia, and Derek (Erika) Lieser; 13 nieces and nephews; his maternal grandparents, Norb and Verna Kalthoff; numerous uncles and aunts, cousins, and many dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Rueben and Martha Lieser.

Mental illness is a very real disease. Just like diabetes or cancer, mental illness can be treated. Matt consistently taught his children to always be kind to others – for you never know the struggles they may be facing. In Matt’s memory – please be kind to others.
