Ferdinand Julius

(Fred) Küss, Jr.

Ferdinand Julius (Fred) Küss, Jr., age 94, of Port Charlotte, FL, formerly of Minneapolis, MN and Fairfax, MN passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on May 3, 2022.

Coach Küss was a beloved teacher, coach and mentor to many students and athletes all over the state of Minnesota and Florida.

He was also very active in the church, singing in the choirs, serving as a deacon, board member, Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school teacher. The Küss family was instrumental in founding Advent Lutheran Church in Maple Grove in 1967.

When he finally retired from teaching and coaching after 55 years, Küss wrote and self-published several children’s books. Because he could talk like Donald Duck, Küss was known as ‘Grandpa Duck’ to his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all of the children in his various churches where they delighted in his children’s sermons right up to the end of his life.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, FJ Sr. and Gertrude (Torgerson) Küss; brother, Dr. Gerald Koos; sister, Barbara White; granddaughter, Michelle Rae (daughter of Dan); and niece, Heidi (Koos) Shaughnessy.

He is survived by son, Timothy (Barbara); daughters, Marti (Mark) Koch and Mary (Larry) Brooks; sons, Mark (Debbie), Daniel, Jonathan (Michelle) and David (Julie); 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many loving nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at his church in Florida on May 21.

Interment will be at Fort Snelling National cemetery at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22 where Küss will receive a military burial with full honors as a WWII Navy veteran. Participants are to meet 15 minutes prior at Assembly Area 4, entering through gate 2 off of 34th Ave.

The Minnesota Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. with visitation at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 24 at Advent Lutheran Church, 9475 Jefferson Highway N., Maple Grove, Mn 55369.

In lieu of flowers, Please direct memorials to the ‘Fred and Ruth Küss Youth Activity Fund’ to give underprivileged kids the ability to participate in sports, church and recreational activities.
