GFW lights football field for the Class of 2020

The GFW football field in Winthrop was lit up for an hour last Friday night. This isn’t an unusual sight, since schools all across the state have been illuminating fields as a sign of hope that things will return to normal. Friday night’s lights, however, had another special meaning at GFW. The field was lit in dedication to the Class of 2020. Several members of the class made luminary bags with each of their classmates’ names on them, then placed them on the football field to spell out their graduation year.

LCS students continue to learn despite distance

Distance isn’t stopping students at Lafayette Charter school from learning. Last week, Ms. Larson’s fifth and sixth graders completed a unit study on natural resources, waste disposal, reusing, recycling, and reducing their ecological footprint. And then, they took what they learned to the streets. And the parks. And the sidewalks and ditches, in New Ulm, Winthrop, Gibbon, and Lafayette. Kids and their families gathered trash in their communities, to honor the Earth and to make a difference in their corner of the world.

GFW School Board considers options for graduation

The GFW School Board met via Zoom, on Monday, April 16.

After the agenda was approved, the group reviewed the Consent Agenda. The resignations of Mary Trebelhorn, part-time cook at the Jr/Sr High School, Sarah Grussendorf, paraprofessional, and Superintendent Lonnie Seifert were all approved. Jackie Anderson, head cook, and Deb Huiras a paraprofessional, both at the Intermediate school, will transfer to the Jr/Sr. High School for the 20-21 school year.

Strong partnership between GFW staff, parents help students succeed

There was little hope that we would be able to return to school on Tuesday, May 5th, but hearing it from the governor last week was still difficult for everyone. We know that social distancing at any school would be challenging and that our student’s safety must come first.

Cedar Mountain responds to COVID-19 with teamwork

The regular meeting of the Cedar Mountain School Board was held on April 20 via Google Meet.

In Administrative Reports, Elementary Principal Patti Machart indicated that the “staff have been so awesome.” They have really done well working together. Teachers and students can communicate online. Students even participated in the annual State Fair Project via video submissions.

School Lunches to go at Cedar Mountain

GFW lunch team works to feed students during pandemic

Lunches are prepared at GFW Intermediate School by the lunch team, which includes a rotation of the cooks and paraprofessionals. The group packs 160 lunches each day and approximately 119 of those are delivered. Cedar Mountain Update

As we begin to wind down another school year, albeit a year like no other year, we look to the future. Next fall will be here before we know it and we will hopefully be back to normal as we remember it.
