Last week we showed you photos from around the area that had winter’s devastation on full display – with snow- and ice-covered roads, cars in the ditch, and snow crews dealing with piles of snow. This week, we offer another perspective, captured by one of our columnists and a local photographer Maggie Gray. She offers the epitome of the ‘Winter Wonderland’ and gives us way to appreciate the beauty of winter in rural Minnesota. (Photos by Maggie Gray, GrayHeart Fine Art Photography)

Old Man Winter has definitely made his presence known so far this season. He has graced us with his presence (and three feet of snow) repeatedly, reminding us that he is here for the duration.
But, the Gibbon Funfest Committee is working hard to bring their annual Winterfest Celebration to local residents and visitors alike, hoping that we can let the Old Man know he won’t bring us down.

Winter storms hit the area multiple times in the past several weeks, causing snow to pile up and creating travel difficulties, school closures, and even a delay in the delivery of mail, including our ability to deliver your Standard-Gazette & Messenger on time! Crews spent hours moving snow to clear roads and streets. And between Fairfax and Franklin, a turkey barn (below) is nearly completely covered in snow. See page 12 for more storm photos.

It was late in the evening on Christmas Day when the fire alarm went off at River Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in Redwood Falls, setting off a series of events that led to the transfer of 35 residents.
While there wasn’t a fire in the building, the alarm activated water sensors which caused a water pipe to separate from the sprinkler system. The facility began flooding with water.
