The general election was held on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. Below are the results from the local races that will impact the school districts, cities and counties within our coverage area, as well as some key state-level races. Keep in mind that, in some cases, these results have not been certified by the governing agency so it’s possible they could change, though the changes would likely be marginal.

In Minnesota, the Land of 10,000 Lakes, it’s not unusual to find people who enjoy the water. Fishing, boating, tubing, water skiing and swimming are typical summer activities for lots of Minnesotans.
However, there are few people who are as passionate about swimming and being in the water as Teresa Welch of Morgan.

The Fairfax City Council held their regular monthly meeting November 7, 2022.
A public hearing on proposed unpaid assessments was opened. With no one present to comment, the hearing was closed and the Council moved to approve Resolution 2022-21 Certifying Unpaid Assessments.

“SOS” is defined as ‘an urgent appeal for help’. Spirit of the Season, the organization in the GFW school district led by Sharon Fossum, has had an ever-increasing number of urgent appeals for help this year.

Not much has changed since last week. Worth mentioning again, however, are the hours at the Gibbon Post Office - Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 1:00 pm and then 2:00 to 4:00 pm. On Saturdays the lobby is open from 8:30 to 10:00 am.
Also, remember to check your mail before you leave Gibbon to ensure that you are getting only your mail.

As part of an ongoing effort to highlight the importance of an all-around education including social emotional learning and overall health, GFW Public Schools is hosting investigative journalist Angela Kennecke to present on the opioid crisis. Angela will be speaking to students and staff during the school day at GFW Middle School and High School, with an additional presentation taking place in the evening that will be open to the public.

Our students celebrated the harvest this week. Students and staff enjoyed dressing up in costumes during our harvest festival day activities. Stations were set up in the gym with different games, and students did art projects related to harvest. We had staff and community volunteers help with this fun day.

There was some activity at the site of the October 2nd Park Street fire in Fairfax on Monday, and while, at first glance, it looks like there is some demolition being done, that’s not the case. According to Fairfax Fire Chief Joel Grejtak, the State Fire Marshal is on site this week and they are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fire. The work being done with the backhoe is part of that investigation. (Staff photos by Bonnie Hartmann)
