Lady T-Birds’ season ends with loss to Warriors

The GFW varsity volleyball team headed to Olivia on Thursday, October 28 for the Section 2A Quarterfinal game.

These two teams had faced each other just a week ago during the regular season, and the T-Birds came into this game looking for a different outcome.

Unfortunately, it was not meant to be. The Warriors dominated the whole match, taking the win in three sets, with scores of 7-25, 8-25 and 15-25, and ending the T-Birds’ season.

Cougars defeat Mustangs to advance to section semifinals

The Cedar Mountain varsity football team earned their way to the Section 2 9-Man semifinal round on Tuesday evening with a 50-12 victory over the Buffalo Lake-Hector- Stewart Mustangs.

The quarterfinal game, which was played in Morgan, had the number four seeded Cougars facing the number five seeded Mustangs.

When these two teams met earlier in the season, the Cougars suffered a heartbreaking 12-14 loss when the Mustangs scored in the final 30 seconds of the game.

T-Birds defeat Bulldogs in Section quarterfinal contest

The GFW Thunderbirds (#2) secured their spot in the Section 2A semi-final round with a win over Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton (#7) on Tuesday, October 26 in Winthrop.

The T-Birds received the ball to start the game and it didn’t take them long to provide the fans some excitement. They put together a drive that covered 60 yards and contained carries by Treay Taylor, Jack Panitzke, Jacob Rose and Nick TenEyck, along with a pass to Ashton Buboltz before Rose ended the series with an eight-yard touchdown run.

Steele advances to State Cross Country meet

The GFW Varsity Cross Country team headed for Blue Earth on Friday, October 29 to compete in the Section 2A Championship Cross Country meet.

The team as a whole finished in seventh place in the 15-team field with a total of 174 points.

Eighth grader Madyson Steele finished the race in fourth place with a time of 20:12.94.  She will advance to run in the State Cross Country meet on November 6th at St. Olaf in Northfield.

Cougars defeat Owls in hard-fought semi-final victory

On Saturday, October 30, the Cedar Mountain Cougars headed to Hancock, Minnesota to take on the number-one seeded Hancock Owls.

The Owls were undefeated so far this season, and there was no reason for them to expect that that wouldn’t continue to be the case.

The Owls put points on the board in both the first and second quarters, the Cougars headed into the halftime break facing a deficit of 14-0.

T-Birds advance to Section Finals

The GFW T-Birds moved one step closer to their third consecutive Section Championship on Saturday evening when they defeated the Lester Prairie Bulldogs 40-14 in the Section 2A semi-final game.

The T-Birds were the first to put points on the board with just under four minutes left in the first quarter. 

Lady Cougars advance following victory over Mountain Lake/Comfrey

The Cedar Mountain varsity volleyball team hosted Mountain Lake/Comfrey in the Seciton 2A Quarterfinal match on Thursday, October 28 in Morgan.

The Cougars earned the number two seed heading into the post-season, while Mountain Lake/Comfrey was seeded seventh.

Cougars slide past Chargers in OT

The Cedar Mountain varsity football team headed to Westbrook on Wednesday, October 20 for their final game of the 2021-22 regular season.

The Cougars received the ball to start the game, and took advantage of the opportunity, putting the first points on the board just five minutes into the game when Nick Freitag broke through the Charger defense and sprinted the 33 yards to the goal line. 

T-Bird girls end regular season with a win over Mavericks

The GFW volleyball teams headed to Trimont on Tuesday, October 19 for their final match of the regular season against the Martin County West Mavericks.

Coming off a tough loss to BOLD the night before, the T-Birds were more determined than ever to end their regular season on a positive note.

The first set was a close one all the way through, but the T-Birds earned the win with a final score of 25-22.

T-Birds suffer their second loss of the season

The GFW varsity football team traveled to St. Clair on Wednesday, October 20 for their final regular-season contest.

The T-Birds received the ball to star the game, and in true T-Bird fashion, they wasted no time putting points on the board. Their first drive ate up most of the first quarter, and contained carries by Nick TenEyck, Jack Panitzke, and Treay Taylor, with a few passes by Quarterback Brody Hentges thrown in to keep the Cyclones guessing.
